Spring 2018 - North Shore Landscapes, and Waterfalls
May 18 - 20, 2018
Silver Bay, MN
Cost of Workshop - $225
Springtime on the North Shore of Lake Superior is a great time for photographers. We have timed this workshop to take advantage of everything that the North Shore has to offer.
We will begin with introductions and a review of the agenda. This will be followed by a lecture where Don will share some tips for shooting on Saturday. Since we will be getting up early on Saturday, we will adjorn early to allow everyone to get plenty of sleep.
Saturday starts bright and early with a sunrise shoot. We will return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, we are off to photograph several waterfalls along one of the north shore's rivers. Since this river has a number of waterfalls, we will spend the entire morning working the falls. Don and Peter will assist everyone with getting some great shots, and also collecting some "HDR Sets" to use during the HDR tutorial coming later in the day.
We will have a quick lunch and then head back to the hotel and spend about an hour doing a quick edit, and critique of the morning's images. We will then head back out to photograph 2 other locations before breaking for dinner.
After dinner, Don will give a tutorial on using HDR for waterfalls. After the tutorial, those that want to work on images and would like some one-on-one editing assistance and critique can work with Don. Others can head out to get some evening sunset shots.
Sunday begins with an optional sunrise shoot. We will then head back to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast we will let the group decide if they would like to visit a new waterfall, or revisit one of the locations from Saturday. Depending upon the vote, we may split-up into two groups. We will meet up for lunch and then start heading for home.
What You Will Need:
To capture silky waterfalls, a long exposure is needed. To aid the process, please bring the following:
Sturdy Tripod - wind can be a big factor this time of year.
Remote Shutter Release - wired tend to work best.
Polarizer - to help remove the glare from the water and rocks.
Neutral Density Filters - at least a 4x, but the higher the number the better.
Microfiber - towel for keeping lens dry from waterfall spray.
Rain Protection for Camera - unless it is lightning, we will shoot in the rain.
Rain Gear for you (in case of rain)
Layered Clothing (this time of year the weather can be pretty unpredictable, gloves and a hat are always a good idea.)
