Photo Hikes & Lectures at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge

For 2019, we will once again be volunteering at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge.  As in past years, we will be giving lectures on various photography topics and leading photo hikes.  These activities are always free.

Landscape photography can be very challenging, but with the right techniques, you can capture some amazing images. We will start off with a lecture providing some tips and techniques to help you capture the scenery around you.

After the lecture we will head over to the Bass Ponds Unit (2501 86th St. East, Bloomington MN, 55425)

Bring a tripod, bug spray and sun screen.

Bird Photography Lecture

May 11th, 2019

9:30 AM until 12:30 PM at the Bloomington Visitor's Center

 3815 American Blvd East, Bloomington

One of the best times of the year to photograph birds is in the spring.  During this lecture, we will discuss some of the techniques and equipment that can be used to capture some fantastic bird images.

After the lecture, we will either head over by the feeders, or head out to one of the other refuge units to practice.

Since we may be heading outdoors, bring bug spray, sun screen, and your longest lens.

Macro and Butterfly Photography

June 22nd, 2019

9:30 AM until 12:30 PM at the Rapids Lake Unit

15865 Carver Highlands Dr, Carver MN

By late June the refuge is full of flowers, butterflies, and all sorts of interesting subjects.  We will begin with a lecture on macro and flower photography.  Don will provide a variety of tips and share some of his techniques.

After the lecture we will go out and photograph some of the flowers and hopefully butterflies around the refuge.

Bring bug spray, sturdy footwear, and long pants (we are in prime tick season)

Late Summer Photo Hike

August 31st, 2019

8:00 AM until 10:00 AM at the Cedar Ave. Bridge Unit

9500 Old Cedar Ave. South, Bloomington MN

Late summer is a great time to be exploring the refuge.  We will meet by the old Cedar Ave. Bridge and head out in a group to capture landscapes, macros, and wildlife.  We should have plenty of subject matter to work with during this hike.

Bring bug spray, sturdy footwear, and long pants (we are in prime tick season).

Night Photography and Light Painting

September 21st, 2019

6:00 PM until 9:30 PM at the Bloomington Visitor's Center

3815 American Blvd East, Bloomington, MN

Photographing after dark can be both fun and challenging.  Don will discuss camera settings, equipment, and demonstrate how to capture great images using only flashlights.  We will work in small teams to capture some images.

Bring a tripod, remote shutter release, flashlight, bug spray and sun screen.

Sunset Photo Hike

November 16th, 2019

3:30 PM until 5:30 PM at the Bloomington Main Visitor's Center

3815 American Blvd East, Bloomington, MN

An annual favorite, as we capture the setting sun over the refuge. The location is perfect as we capture the sun as it sets over the grasses which will be showing their full fall color. We will head down the trail and get into position. Along the way, we will experiment with capturing sun bursts through the trees, and some long shadow landscapes.

Tripods are a must for this hike since we will be dealing with some long exposures.
