Frozen Hiker Photography is collaborating with Hot Sams Foto Park in Lakeville MN to offer this unique photo experience.  Hot Sams has a large collection of antique buildings, cars, planes, movie props, and other "things."  It is really a photographer's paradise.

Photography is all about capturing light.  Nothing illustrates that more than light painting.  Of course, having some great subject matter also helps, and Hot Sams provides a lot of really great subject matter for light painting.  Light painting does not require expensive gear, fancy lenses, or tools.  All you need to get started is a camera that allows for manual settings, a kit lens, a tripod and a flashlight.

Course Overview:

This class consists of a lecture followed by several hours of in the field shooting.  The shooting portion of the class is designed to allow you to practice the techniques taught in the class with the assistance of an instructor.  We have found this to be an excellent way to reinforce the concepts.

This course covers the following topics:

  • A discussion of the different types of light painting

  • An overview of equipment

    • Cameras and lenses

    • Light painting tools

    • Using an intervalometer

  • Classic light painting using ordinary flashlights

    • Basic light painting techniques

    • Single shot and composite captures

    • Determining the baseline exposure

    • Combining Light painting with astrophotography

  • Special effects using light

    • Creating ghosts

    • Light writing

    • Using el-wire

  • Post processing techniques

During the class we will show a number of examples as we explain these concepts.  This will help you understand how this might apply to photos that you want to take.  â€‹

The classroom portion will last about 1 1/2 hours.  Once the classroom portion is complete, we will venture out to practice.  During the time in the field, participants will be guided through a set of exercises designed to reinforce the concepts taught during the class.  We will start with a group shoot to make sure everyone is comfortable with the techniques taught in the class. We will then break up into small groups to allow you to capture your own unique images. During that time, Don will be available to answer questions and assist with set-up.
