Frozen Hiker Photography is collaborating with Hot Sams Foto Park in Lakeville MN to offer this unique photo experience.  Hot Sams has a large collection of antique buildings, cars, planes, movie props, and other "things."  It is really a photographer's paradise.

Whether you are getting your kicks on Route 66, or heading "up north", it in not unusual to see some really fun roadside attractions.  These range from sculptures designed to get us to visit a location, fun artwork, old cars and trucks, water towers, or even something defining a town, county, or area.  These things can make for some fun photography subjects.  All it takes is a little patience, understanding the light, and experimenting with different compositions.

During this class, we will cover finding the perfect angle, managing the background, working with light, and directing the viewer.  We will also cover some of the challenges with capturing these icons of Americana.

Course Overview:

This class is designed to be a full hands on activity that follows the approach of short discussions followed by shooting exercises.  We have found this to be an excellent way to reinforce the class concepts.

This course covers the following topics:

• Understanding composition

• Managing the background

  • Finding the right angle

  • The effects of different focal lengths

  • Managing depth of field

  • Working with distractions​

• The role of light
  • Direction of light​
  • Working with shiny objects
  • High and low contrast light

• Special effects 

  • Working with motion

  • Adding interest using people or props

 

During the class we will show a number of examples as we explain these concepts.  This will help you understand how this might apply to photos that you want to take.  ​

The workshop will take place outdoors in order to help maintain proper social distancing.  We will visit several of the items that have been preselected based upon the topics in the agenda.  Don will provide a tutorial at each location, followed by the opportunity for everyone to capture their own photos. Once all of the preselected items have been visited, time will be provided for participants to capture photos of some of the other unique items at Hot Sams. During that time, Don will be available to answer questions and assist with set-up.
